Growing Organic Sterilized Mushroom Growing Substrate

Description

Growing Organic Sterilized Mushroom Growing Substrate is a sterilized blend in a filter patch bag, made for growing mushrooms. The bag and the packaging the substrate is sterilized in are fully compostable.

What's in it

  • Organic coconut coir
  • Vermiculite
  • Compost
  • Calcium sulfate

How to use

Use these directions to make a mushroom growing tub at home.

  1. Before opening the substrate bag, prepare your fruiting chamber or mono-tub by cleaning it thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol. Wear latex gloves and keep your work area as sterile as you can. If you need help setting up a fruiting chamber or mono-tub, check an online guide so you know you are using the product correctly.
  2. Before opening the bag, break up the contents so they can become aerated. Then open the bag and dump the contents into your sterilized bin.
  3. Keep your gloves on. Take a handful of the substrate and squeeze it. You should see a few drops of water come out. If you do not, mix in small amounts of sterilized water until it is properly hydrated. Mushrooms exhale carbon dioxide and inhale oxygen, so they will suffocate without enough airflow. Make sure your bin has proper airflow.
  4. Use 1.5 lbs. of inoculated grain spawn per 5 lb. bag of the substrate. Mix the grain spawn thoroughly into the substrate in your tub. Still wearing latex gloves, cover the bin with its lid, making sure there are filtered holes in it for air exchange. Incubation for most species takes about 2-3 weeks; some take longer. Check your bin regularly and look for healthy mycelium growth. The bin will slowly turn white from mycelium growth.
  5. When the bin is fully colonized, you will begin to see mushroom pins or hyphae growing from the top of the substrate. At this point you can either let the mushrooms continue to grow on their own or add a thin layer of coco coir or other media to the top. Keep your bin humid and the air flowing.

Good to know

  • Sterilized water is water that is free of bacterial and/or microbial life. Water is typically sterilized using an autoclave or a pressure cooker. You may also choose to use 2-3 Tbsp. of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water to sterilize it.
  • The substrate bags can also be used to grow mushrooms on outdoor beds.
  • Use only for lawful purposes.
