Description
A mineral kit for building soil on a sphagnum peat moss base. It balances the pH, adds calcium, helps make other nutrients available and adds trace minerals to your soil. This is the 27 lb size (37 cups), which mixes into 9 cubic feet of soil (1/3 yard).
What's in it
- 2 parts Build A Soil basalt - rock dust for trace minerals; highly paramagnetic
- 1 part gypsum dust - calcium and sulfur; locally mined in Colorado
- 1 part oyster shell flour - calcium carbonate, mined from San Francisco Bay and high in calcium; adds available calcium and limes the peat moss
How to use
Use at 4 cups per cubic foot of soil, or about 1/2 cup per gallon of soil. One large mineral kit mixes with 1/2 yard of soil, and 1/2 yard is 13.5 cubic feet.
This kit is for making a new batch of soil with Canadian sphagnum peat moss. Peat moss is acidic, and this mineral mix helps balance the pH. Because of peat moss's low pH, the kit includes oyster flour to add lots of calcium and help raise the pH to proper levels.
If you are re-amending soil or working with coconut coir, look at the other mineral mixes instead.
Mixing your own soil
To mix your own soil you need a Nutrient Kit and a Mineral Kit. The matching nutrient side is the Nutrient Kit for sphagnum peat moss base, ClackamasCoots style. The two are kept separate so that the natural moisture in the rock dust doesn't affect the raw nutrients.

Benefits of remineralization
- Provides slow, natural release of elements and trace minerals
- Increases the nutrient intake of plants
- Increases yields and gives higher brix reading
- Rebalances soil pH
- Increases earthworm activity and the growth of microorganisms
- Builds humus complex
- Prevents soil erosion
- Increases the storage capacity of the soil
- Increases plant resistance to insects, disease, frost and drought
- Enhances flavor in crops
- Decreases dependence on fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides
