About Matt
Matt has been cultivating for more than twenty-five years, and for the last decade he has been helping legal licensed facilities shine their brightest — using the most cutting-edge technology and technique in commercial cultivation today. That is the difference between someone who sells the bottle and someone who has done the work.
His approach is synganic — synthetic and organic together rather than one or the other. A salt-based base program runs in the reservoir, microbials go in alongside it, and then once a week the plants get a hand-watered organic feed on top. Coco or rockwool for media, Athena for the salt base, fed through the irrigation lines on 0.5 GPH Netafim drippers. The salt program does the heavy lifting and holds the numbers exactly where he wants them, the microbials keep the root zone working, and the weekly organic pass is what pulls the rest of the potential out of the plant. Under-canopy lighting alongside high-intensity LED, dialled in to 4+ pounds per 16 square feet.

What “synganic” means
It is a portmanteau — synthetic plus organic — and it describes running both at once instead of picking a side. Growers tend to get pushed into one camp or the other: mineral salts for precision and repeatability, or organics for soil life and flavour. Synganic is the refusal to choose.
In practice, for Matt, it is three things happening together:
- A salt-based base in the reservoir. This is what gives you control. You know your EC, you know your ratios, and you can hold them week after week without guessing.
- Microbials in the reservoir too. Microbial Mass in his case. The biology goes in with the feed rather than being treated as a separate soil-only thing.
- A weekly organic feed by hand. One pass a week, watered in, on top of the salt program. That is the part that brings out what the mineral feed alone leaves on the table.
The salts keep the numbers honest. The biology keeps the root zone alive. The weekly organic feed is where the quality comes from. Run coco or rockwool under it and you get the repeatability of a hydro system without giving up what organics do for the finish.
